What has marquetry got to do with photography? Ummm .... nothing that I can come up with that would make any sense, but hey, I can have more than one passion can't I?
Marquetry is a craft that I learned whilst cruising on my yacht in the early 90's and has helped me while away many a stormy day sheltered in the lee of an island or bay. Marquetry, or veneer inlay, is very detailed work and requires an immense amount of patience and time, but is rewarding when a project finally all comes together and the finishing oil is applied.
Wood is one of the oldest natural materials that has not only survived, but is still popular in today's modern synthetic world. Marquetry utilises thin veneers of common and exotic timbers that can produce artwork of enduring beauty.
The art of marquetry is not difficult to learn, but like many arts, it can be difficult to learn to do well. Simply put, you cut up veneers and create your own jigsaw puzzle, glue them together and mount it on a firm base. Then you squirt a little oil on the face to finish it, and frame it... easy!
The equipment you need is a selection of timber veneers, some suitable designs, a scalpel, a few bandaids, a cutting board and some glue. But I believe that the two most important things that are required to produce quality marquetry is the love of working with timber, and patience... lots and lots of patience.
Most of the artwork that is listed below is for sale but subject to availability. If an item is sold out, I do take orders but please be patient and allow several weeks for completion.
